What does my child do all day?

It's a common question and if your child is like most children, they'll probably say "nothing" or "play" or "take a nap".  Many were able to come to the workshop Thursday night and get a firsthand look at what we do in Pre-k.  If you didn't get a chance to see, here's a sneak peek at our day!

In the morning when the children come in, those who eat breakfast at school go to the cafeteria first and eat.  When they are done, they come down to the classroom and unpack all of their belongings and go to their table and work with manipulatives or books.  This can be anything from stringing beads, to shape blocks to patterning cards and animals.  Here are a few pictures of us at work:

When everyone gets to school we start our day!  We come to the carpet after cleaning up our toys from the table.  We use the smart board to review the months of the year with this song Months of the year song, the days of the week with this song days of the week song, talk about the calendar with this site: calendar , and sing an ABC rap song ABC rap.  We also remind the students of the rules in our class with this song rules song.  We also work on other skills as a group to increase our understanding of different concepts.  Lately it has been putting things in size order small, medium and large. 

After we complete our circle time we go to small groups.  Small group is a time when Mrs. McCallum and myself get to pull 2-8 children in groups and work on skills such as sorting, story comprehension, or science experiments.  Other children who are not in a teacher directed group are in independent small groups and will work on activities by themselves, such as practicing writing their names, putting together puzzles or reading books.

After small group we work in our centers.  Our favorite centers are blocks, home living, math and art! 

We clean up from centers using this song clean up.  We read a quick story while using the restroom and washing hands.  

Then comes lunch! We eat 10:43-11:13.  Feel free to come and join your child for lunch one day!

After we eat, we kids read books while taking turns in the bathroom.  

And then we go outside!!! We love playing on the playground!

When we come inside we get water to cool down and then go to the carpet for large group time.  This is a time when we get to do lots of fun stuff, such as the time when we learned about color mixing. 

After we are done with large group, we dance!  We love to dance and sing!

After all of that, we sleep!  Most everyone sleeps REALLY well!  We have a busy day so they are TIRED!

When we get up, we pack up all of our belongings and go to the hallway for a story, and a songs for our closing.  We talk about what we will do tomorrow, or what we did during the day.
